Robert WEIL (Rheingau) -- 2015 Rieslings and a 2014 Riesling Sekt

Quite possibly the top Rheingau estate for now and the past quarter century, Weil has a very good selection here.

2014 Riesling (Deutscher Sekt) Brut
This is a sparkling wine made from Riesling. The wine is extra dry, light, fine, and mineral — a lovely wine for aperitif or with food. 12.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 102 16.  89/A

2015 Riesling trocken
This is classic dry Rheingau Riesling with good minerality, energy, and crispness in a medium-weight body. It is elegant with good penetration, and it is easily approachable now. 12.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 006 16.  89/B

2015 Kiedricher Riesling trocken
The Kiedricher trocken is denser and more concentrated than the previous wine, and it shows intense minerality to go with incipient yellow plum fruit. It is an outstanding wine for food for the near and medium term. 12.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 023 16.  90(+)/B+

2015 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling trocken
Kiedrich Turmberg is a vineyard above the Gräfenberg and especially with the effects of global warming, it is one of the top vineyards in the Rheingau, even though not (currently) classed as a Grosse Lage. The wine has a creamy texture and is medium-weight with intensity to its fruit, which for now is more white than yellow. Compared to earlier vintages, it lacks some structure and grip. 13.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 025 16. 90/B+

2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs
This is one of the finest GG’s I can recall from Weil. The nose shows plum blossom aromas with great finesse, complexity, and delicacy. The mouth displays minerality and plum fruit with a smooth texture, medium weight, great length, and overall harmony.  95/A+

2015 Riesling tradition
This is a most attractive wine as an aperitif and can also work well with food. The wine has the soft acidity of 2015, yet it is also firm on the palate. There is crystallinity here, a hint of cinnamon, and yellow plum and peach fruit. The wine has just a suggestion of sweetness, making all that more attractive on its own for the roundness the sugar adds. 10.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 030 16. 88/A

2015 Riesling Kabinett
This is rather sweet Kabinett with moderate acidity, a glossy texture, and ripe yellow and green plum fruit. 9.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 011 16. 90+/A

2015 Riesling Spätlese
The Spätlese is medium-weight with a fair amount of sweetness and yellow plum and apricot fruit that also show a touch of spiciness. The texture is a little short of oily. 9.0% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 012 16.  89/B

2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese
This wine is in an altogether different league from the regular Spätlese in terms of density and complexity. With finesse and balance, the wine shows very good sugar/acid balance and has mineral yellow fruits. It is still quite young, so give it time to develop. 8.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 015 16. 93/A

2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese
Typical of Weil noble sweet wines, you get a wine that tastes like the next level up, in this case a Beerenauslese, declassified. The acidity in the wine is high enough to keep the sugar/acid on a knife-edge balance and to prevent the wine from being overly sweet or even cloying. Nevertheless, the malic acidity would appear to be relatively low, and so the acidic attack is not aggressive. The wine is still quite closed and needs plenty of time to expand, but the deep citric and tropical fruits are there. 8.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 018 16. 95(+)/A

2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese
This wine is light and intense wth honeyed apple aromas and flavors and good intensity. It needs time to deepen and develop, however. 8.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 020 16. 95+/A-

2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese

Last, the Kiedrich Gräfenberg Trockenbeerenauslese has sufficient acidity but doesn’t have the super hight acidity that one often finds in a TBA. As a result, the wine is delicious already with intense apricot aromas and flavors and just a hint of caramel. 98/A
